The UNA USA Queens Chapter is a 501(C)3 organization funded by membership dues and donations. We have no staff or offices. Executive committee, directors and committee members perform all tasks and functions related to our mission. Please check our event calender for monthly events and meeting.

UNA USA Queens Chapter Highlights 2013

 

2013 was a busy year for Directors and members. In addition to responding to and participating in many UNA online events and calls for action, we gained a few new members through outreach efforts but lost many of last year’s new members, especially students. (We will be sending renewal reminders since national office has not done so this year.) Peg Shannon serves on the UNA Southern Division board and attends meetings of the PEHT (Partnership to Eradicate Human Trafficking, a committee of UNA Queens.) Directors attend many events and made contact with elected officials on matters of concern. The following are highlights of our year:

•February 4, many of us attended the UNA-USA Member's Day at the UN Headquarter

•March 24, we held our 5th annual Earth Day Celebration at the Spring Equinox.

•April 4, we met with Representative Grace Meng.

•April 24, we held our Annual Essay Contest Reception.

•June 2 and 3, Pat Hollander represented our chapter at the UNA USA Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.

•June 8, we cosponsored a World Environment Day at Alley Pond Environmental Center.

•August 10, we held an International Potluck picnic at Alley Pond Environmental Center.

•September 18, Peg Shannon was a guest speaker for a human trafficking seminar at the Sheraton LaGuardia Hotel in Flushing.

•September 28, we staffed an informational table at the Annual Estuaries and World Environment Day celebration at Alley Pond Environmental Center.

•October 9, Director Javed Ahmad was a guest speaker at Thomas Edison HS Model UN Class.

•October 9, we staffed a table at the Parent Empowerment Day for District 25 Public Schools.

•October 15, we met with Congressman Joseph Crowley’s aide.

•October 24, we held the U N Flag raising ceremony with student presentations and songs.

•November 1, The Southern NY State Division of UNA USA sponsored a The World We Want - USA Consultations on the Post 2015 Millennium Development Goal Agenda. Peg Shannon and Pat Hollander contributed ideas and recommendations and Peg facilitated a table. We were also represented by two other members: Javed Ahmad and Mark Benavides.

•October 27, we sponsored a forum on UN Peacekeeping at the Queens Central Library.

•November 21, from 11am-3pm, we staffed an informational table at St. John’s International Opportunities Fair.

•UNA-USA Queens is a founding member of the coalition led by CWNY to oppose sex trafficking in Queens.

•We are awaiting an appointment with Congressperson Gregory Meeks.

•The President and Secretary attended meetings and teleconferences of Southern NYS Division more than monthly.

UNA USA Queens Chapter Annual Report for the Year 2012

 

 

2012 was a very busy year for Directors and members. In addition to responding to and participating in many UNA online events and calls for action, we gained 46 new members through outreach efforts.

 

Peg Shannon serves on the UNA Southern Division board and attends meetings of the PEHT (Partnership to Eradicate Human Trafficking, a committee of UNA Queens.)

 

Directors attended many events, including a celebration of Brazil and the inaugural meeting of the Nassau County UNA as individuals and made contact with elected officials on matters of concern.

 

The following are highlights of our year:

 

 

February 10, Friday, many of us attended the UNA-USA Member's Day at the UN Headquarter

March 20, Tuesday, John Tandana was the keynote speaker at a Queens Zonta dinner attended by several UNA members.

March 24, Saturday, we held our 4rd annual Earth Day Celebration at the Spring Equinox.

May 30, Wednesday, we held our Annual Essay Contest Reception.

June 10th and 11th, Peg Shannon and Pat Hollander represented our chapter at the UNA USA Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.

June 30, Saturday 2-4 pm, we held our first cultural program with the Blue Pipa Trio and Amir El-Saffar at the Queens Museum of Art: East Meets Middle Eastern.

July 18, Wednesday, 6-8:30 pm, we cosponsored with the UN in celebrating Nelson Mandela Day at the Queens Museum of Art.

July 22, Sunday, starting at 1pm we held our first social at the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden in Astoria.

August 5, Sunday from noon – 2:30 pm. at the Queens Botanical Garden in Flushing we held our annual International Potluck.

September 29, Saturday we staffed an informational table at the Annual Estuaries’ Day and World Environment Day celebration at Alley Pond Environmental Center.

October 24, Wednesday, we held two UN Day celebrations at Queens Borough Hall. In the morning there was the Flag raising ceremony with student presentations and songs and at 7pm we joined with Rotary International in presenting a program: Solutions for a Prosperous World – Healthy Children.

November 15, Thursday from 11am-3pm, we staffed an informational table at St. John’s International Opportunities Fair.

December 10, 11, Saturday and Sunday, Peg Shannon represented us at the Queens Interfaith Human Rights Day Roundtable and a subsequent meeting.
